WorkSafe NZ hazardous-substances alignment

A practical path from chemical list to controlled workplace.

ChemMatrix turns WorkSafe guidance into a clear, site-specific review for farms, trades, workshops and SMEs—without pretending every workplace has the same requirements.

01

Identify what is present

Find every hazardous substance and hazardous waste item across stores, tanks, workshops, vehicles and work areas.

02

Build the inventory

Record the product or identifier, maximum likely quantity, classification and workplace location, then keep the information current.

03

Connect current SDSs

Hold a current safety data sheet for every hazardous substance, regardless of quantity, and make the information readily accessible.

04

Determine key controls

Use classifications and maximum quantities in the WorkSafe Hazardous Substances Calculator to identify the requirements that may apply.

05

Check storage and labels

Review container condition, compatibility, separation, containment, ventilation, ignition sources, signage and workplace labels.

06

Prepare people

Confirm workers receive the information, training, instruction and supervision needed for the substances and tasks they perform.

07

Plan for emergencies

Check spill, fire and exposure arrangements, equipment and information. Formal emergency-plan triggers depend on substances and quantities.

08

Confirm specialist triggers

Identify whether certified handlers, location compliance certificates, stationary-container certification or other specialist controls may be required.

Important service boundary

Readiness support, not regulator approval.

ChemMatrix is an independent consultancy and is not part of, accredited by or endorsed by WorkSafe New Zealand. A ChemMatrix assessment helps organise evidence, identify likely requirements and prioritise corrective action. It is not a compliance certificate, legal opinion or guarantee that every duty has been met.

Exact controls depend on the substances, classifications, quantities, storage arrangements and work undertaken. Where formal certification or specialist technical approval is required, ChemMatrix will identify the need and refer the work to an appropriately authorised compliance certifier or specialist.

Official guidance used

Check the primary sources.

Guidance and legal requirements can change. ChemMatrix checks the current WorkSafe and EPA information when completing a client-specific assessment.
